Court determines that Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys requires conservatorship due to cognitive deterioration.

A judge ruled on Thursday that Brian Wilson, the founder of the Beach Boys and a music icon, should be placed under a court conservatorship to oversee his personal and medical choices, following a diagnosis of what his doctor termed a "major neurocognitive disorder." Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May granted the request made by the 81-year-old Wilson's family and close associates. The decision came after the passing of Wilson's wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, in January, who had been primarily responsible for managing his affairs and tasks.

Two of Wilson’s seven children, Carnie and Wendy Wilson from the singing group Wilson Phillips, requested through their attorney that all children be included in a group text chain about their father and consulted on medical decisions. The judge granted these stipulations.

Although the daughters requested a delay in the process at an April 30 hearing, it was evident at the subsequent hearing that consensus
had been reached.

A doctor’s declaration filed with the petition in February stated that Wilson has a “major neurocognitive disorder,” takes medication for dementia, and “is unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”

Sievers and Hard have had a close relationship with Wilson and his wife for many years. In a report, attorney Robert Frank Cipriano, appointed by the court to represent Wilson’s interests, mentioned that Wilson acknowledged the need for the conservatorship and trusts the judgment of the two women.

Cipriano’s report to the court indicated that he visited Wilson at his "impeccably well-maintained residence in Beverly Hills," where he lives with two daughters and a long-term live-in caregiver.

Wilson can move around with help from a walker and the caregiver, Cipriano said, and he has a good sense of who he is, where he is, and when it is, but could not name his children beyond the two that live with him.

He noted that Wilson was "mostly difficult to understand and gave very short responses to questions and comments."

Cipriano approved of the conservatorship, primarily due to Wilson’s general consent.

Ledbetter is credited with stabilizing Wilson's famously troubled life after their meeting in the mid-1980s and subsequent marriage in 1995.

According to a family statement, Wilson, his seven children, his caregiver, and his doctors were consulted before the petition was filed. The decision was made to ensure "there will be no extreme changes" and that "Brian will be able to enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects."

In California, judges can appoint a conservator for a person, their finances, or both. Wilson's case is more akin to the traditional use of a conservatorship, typically employed for an older individual facing irreversible mental decline. Unlike Britney Spears' situation, which highlighted issues with conservatorships and led to legislative changes, Wilson's case did not seek a conservator of the estate because his assets are managed within a trust, with Hard serving as a trustee.

Despite struggles with mental health and substance abuse issues that disrupted his career in the 1960s, Wilson remains deeply revered and acclaimed as a co-founder, producer, arranger, and chief songwriter of the Beach Boys, as well as a masterful innovator of vocal harmony. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 alongside his bandmates, including his brothers Carl and Dennis and his cousin Mike Love.
